Hi Msmaz,
Hope you don't mind but I moved your post to a better area for it.
It's a term that was developed when the internet was developing and when a lot of discussion went on in Usenet newsgroups before message boards became so popular. It's now used widely over the internet.
Basically a "troll" is a person who deliberately posts, fishing for trouble hoping that people will bite. A troll post is an outrageous message posted to a message board, newsgroup or mailing list to bait people to answer.
Trolling can cover a range of behaviours from being deliberately posting insulting responses to deliberately asking stupid questions or posting inappropriately sexually explicit material in order to shock or upset people.
Posting in a sexuality thread for example "I think all gays should be shot" would be considered trolling. Or posting on the main board "All you depressed people should quit whining and grow a backbone."
Sometimes trolling can be a bit more subtle and a troll will post normally for a while before starting to bait people. This type can be a bit more difficult to manage from the point of view of an admin team - but the end result is the same. If someone continually posts inappropriate, inflammatory material then UKDF removes their membership.
Hope that helps!

I guess I am just a simple minded person...but I thought trolling only met trying to hook up with on someone on the internet.... not something I practice at my age LMAO
Never knew it had all of those other implications that went with it...I have used the word trolling from time to time...sort of like ' cruising ' in a car when we were kids looking to find some guys to flirt with....
Ok...well...whatever

Trolling is now a very well discussed subject!! There are even pages devoted to explaining what makes a troll and even what post types are the most inflammatory.

Interestingly, the term troll is taken from the fishing term trolling - a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite (had no idea of that one!) rather than the creatures that hid under the bridge trying to catch the billy goats gruff and those annoying toys with the spikey fluffy hair from the 90s - anyone remember them??!
I've had an education today.

Hi Halva...
Thank you for the sites...I will read them. One need not worry however that I should be caught " trolling " lol.... The last couple of years I have spent my time working, rarely on the internet, watching TV and I was going to school...I hardly listened to the news even.... I will read the links for my information especially since I have teens...Thanks so much.!!!

I dunno Cheryl, you seem to inflame Jake all the time.
Double entendre completely intentional.

Those kinds of trolls (the inanimate ones) were just cute, I agree -- and who remembers Rat Finks? hehehehe ....
By the way, msmaz, thank for asking this question. It was very astute, and even though I generally knew what trolling was, I have learned something today, so it helped. This is what UKDF is all about, hon.
